Tammy Huynh is a Vietnamese American vocalist, composer, educator that aspires to write music that unites her unique, diverse, personal and musical experiences into compelling narratives. She holds the importance of storytelling as paramount and strives to write music that is innovative, approachable, and empathetic. Huynh received her B.M. in Jazz Studies from Temple University’s Honors College and her M.M. in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music.
She has had the privilege to learn from mentors such as Sara Serpa, Sachal Vasandani, Jo Lawry, and Theo Bleckmann. Huynh is an alumna of the Diamond Research Scholars Program. Her research focused on works by vocalist, educator, and activist, Jeanne Lee. Huynh is also an alumna of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music led by Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey. She is currently faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. Huynh takes pride in her songwriting and actively performs under Mitamu. She has performed with her band around the Philadelphia and NYC area since 2019.
In 2022, Huynh won 1st place at the Beta Hi-Fi Emerging Artist Festival Competition. She was selected out of 300 artists and performed among nine other finalists. In October 2021, Huynh released her first studio album, sunflower in the east. It is influenced by everything from 80s pop, improvised music, and poetry. The record is a tribute to the trials and triumphs of growing up, learning to be vulnerable, and maintaining a creative existence in a commodified world. Through poignant lyrics and creative production, it breathes with nostalgia for the romance of youth from a more sophisticated future.
